Resumo

In June 2018, the National Center of Microbiology diagnosed the first case of rabies in a bat from Castilla y Leon, that was positive for Lyssavirus type 1, after it bit a hand of a women from Valladolid1. What should be done in this situation? Most of the cases of rabies are transmitted by rabid animals by a bite and the risk increases when the bites are multiple or near the central nervous system. To prevent infection, it is important to inform the population on the urgent need to wash the wound and to go to the closest health care center, where the evaluation of the risk will be conducted. Post-exposure prophylaxis should be administered to all the patients who have had a known or probable exposure to rabies, this including patients who received prophylaxis prior to the exposure who, however, will not require anti-rabies immunoglobulin.
