Abstract

From late 2019 to early 2020, several municipalities belonging to the provinces of León, Salamanca and Zamora approved a motion calling for autonomy (Lexit). In most cases, the Unión del Pueblo Leonés (Union of the León People) defended the motion. The fact that the León municipal government was the first to support it explained the strong media impact of this vindication. This work proposes to analyze the arguments raised by the actors involved to find out if they refer to the factors explaining the España vacía («Empty Spain»). In order to do this, semi-structured interviews have been conducted. The intention of this contribution is not to examine the potential viability of the secession process, but to reflect on the arguments that emerges in the discourses related to rural geography.
