Resumo

In the present work EGFR-T17 cells (a line transfected with the receptor for epidermal growth factor, EGF), were used as a cell system for studying the action of several toxic oil syndrome (TOS)-related oils, coming from affected (case associated oil) or non-affected (non-case associated oil) families. Commercial edible oils, and oleic and elaidic fatty acids were used as additional controls. In such cell system three parameters were studied, ie: EGF-induced [Ca2+](i) rise, cell viability under resting conditions and cell proliferation. The cell system used, though unable to establish significant differences between case and no-case associated oils, clearly differentiated between edible oils of current consumption and TOS-related oils. Further studies are necessary in order to establish whether it could be a suitable bioassay to establish toxicity of oil samples and to guide a further purification of the toxic compound(s) present in TOS-related oils.
