Abstract

The endogenous opioid peptides have been shown to stimulate prolactin reléase in the rat. Naloxone, a specific opiate antagonist, blocks this re léase. Prolactin reléase is pulsatile during estrous cycle of the rat. We were interested in determining the effect of morphine and naloxone in the pattern of pulsatile pro lactin reléase in the unanesthetized, freely moving rats. Administration of morphine significantly increased all parameters of pulsatile prolactin secretion except the pulse frequency. The results of this study suggest that morphin acts on hypothalamus to stimulate pulsatile secretion of prolactin.
