Abstract

In the present work the parameters usually takeninto account to consider a tree as a plant monument as wellas the evolution of spanish norms about cataloguing ofmonument trees are commented. Later, the article focuseson the analysis of the most important works on treecataloguing in Galicia, which from our point of view arerepresented by the books ‘Inventario de ÁrbolesSobresalientes de Galicia’ (‘Inventory of Outstanding Trees of Galicia’)(1985), which compilates 260 plant monuments:102, 49, 39 and 70 in the provinces of A Coruña, Lugo,Ourense and Pontevedra respectively, being autoctonous20% of the 69 cited species, and ‘Árboles Monumentales enel Patrimonio Cultural de Galicia’ (‘Monumental Trees in theCultural Heritage of Galicia’) (2003), where 345 specimensare cited from which 124 are in A Coruña, 63 in Lugo, 34 inOurense and 124 in Pontevedra, representing 117 species,from which 17% are autoctonous.
