Resumo
This paper is a commentary on the Occupational Cancer Convention No. 139 adopted by the ILO in 1974. It is one of the ILO’s international standards on Occupational Safety and Health aimed at protecting workers from specific occupational hazards, in this case, those derived from the exposure to carcinogenic substances or agents. The Convention includes a series of obligations for the States that ratify it, i.e., the identification of prohibited carcinogenic substances or agents; the replacement of carcinogens with less dangerous ones; the protection of workers against the risks arising from the use of these products when it is not possible to eliminate them, and the establishment of an appropriate system of records; the duty of information and training of exposed workers; and, finally, risk assessment and health surveillance
