Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present the 8 radiocarbon datings from the site of As Mamelas (Sanxenxo, Pontevedra), an area of open-air prehistoric activity, and to explore the problems associated with these types of sites in Galicia. As Mamelas is an exceptional, complex site in contextual terms, as it contains two areas of inhabitation and one funerary area, covering some 16,000 square metres, which were occupied over a period of 5000 years. These archaeological sites are still difficult to understand today in Galicia due to stratigraphic problems caused by the almost exclusive presence of a ‘horizontal stratification’ and the absence of any clear verticality in the archeological deposits. As the chronology of the site is dealt with in a complementary manner, some concise information is added to the study of the ceramic materials from the site, as this makes it possible to complete its chronology, providing a relative dating of certain moments of activity that were not registered by the radiometric analyses.
