Abstract
The analysis of aerial photographs from the Atlantic coast of Galicia, covering from 1956 to 2010 revealed a process of rapid dune progradation between 1956 and 2003, followed by stabilization. During the same time period a beach on a shore platform just to the north was eroded. The analysis of the meteorological and wave databases (SIMAR-44 and WANA) suggests a reduction in the wave energy as well as a decreasing wind speed and precipitation. The reduction in wave energy can be the cause of the dune progradation, but not for the erosion of the platform beach. The strong negative correlation found between the rates of dune progradation and beach erosion suggests that the dune fixation reduced or even halted the northward sediment transport, causing the erosion of the platform beach.
