Abstract

Purpose: One of the aspects that we must take into account when planning a maxillary sinus lift surgery is the amount of graft material that we will need to achieve an adequate increase in bone availability at this level. Objectives: The main objective of the present study is to calculate, in a presurgical way, the graft volume necessary to perform a maxillary sinus lift using the open or side window technique, and the subsequent rehabilitation using 12 mm dental implants of length. Material and method: We used CBCT images of 68 patients, 26 men and 42 women, aged between 40 and 76 years, with an average of 60 years. A total of 116 maxillary sinuses were studied. To determine the necessary graft volume in each case, we used ITK-SNAP® software, designed for the segmentation of structures in medical images. Results: The mean graft volume necessary to achieve a height of 13 mm was 1321.5 mm³ for the right maxillary sinus, with a range of 366.4 to 3178.0. For the left maxillary sinus, the mean volume was 1503.5 mm³, with a range of 308.3 to 5940.0 mm³. Conclusion: We consider that the ITK-SNAP® software is a useful tool in the planning of a maxillary sinus lift surgery, since it allows us to calculate the graft volume in mm³ in a presurgical way, as well as its visualization in 3D.
