Abstract

The subject of Mathematics is a complex discipline both, for teaching it and for learning it, and generates a diverse range of attitudes from the students in the teaching-learning process. We have set as the main objective of this investigation to examine if there are differences in some variables related to the attitudes towards mathematics in the students of Primary Education according to the course and the gender. Some of these variables are: perceived competence, extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation, utility perception and anxiety. The participants are 897 students in the 5th and 6th years of Primary Education (49.8% girls and 50.2% boys). The pertinent analyses show the evidence that the students of 5º of Primary are those that present the attitudinal and motivating conditions much more positive than the students of 6º course. Regarding to the differences according to the gender, the girls show a "Profile" less adaptative than boys, respect to their perceived competence, as well as their motivation towards mathematics and also with the emotions and anxiety associated with this matter.
