Abstract

One of the most devastating earthquakes in the history of Italy was the one in Calabria and Sicilila northeastern in 1783. The affected cities were numerous, aspect that implied its reconstruction with novel interventions. Due to the large losses, the government, chaired by Fernando IV, undertook measures that tried to propose a renewal of the affected areas, giving rise to the first anti-seismic regulation. Another of the most suggestive initiatives was the written rela -tionship by the Reale Accademia delle Scienzie e delle Lettere di Napoli. We refer to the Istoria de’fenomi del tremoto avvenuto nelle Calabrie e nel Valdemone, a chronicle of the earthquake and the damages caused, accompanied by interesting drawings carried out by Pompeo Schiantarelli and Ignazio Stille
