Abstract
This paper presents an assessment of the criminal procedure used by the roman provincial governors in the Principate: the cognitio extra ordinem. The Acta Martyrum afford a unique testimony of how this procedure functioned, showing the powerful position that the provincial governors occupied in the provinces.
