Abstract

Irrational beliefs prevail in intimate partner batterers have been associated to the origin and persistence of intimate partner mistreatment. The aim of this study is to analyze the impact of such distorted thoughts from a sample of 71 convicted male batterers, serving a sentence on probation and participating of the Galician re-educative program for gender aggressors. The Questionnaire of irrational beliefs and distorted thoughts concerning the use of violence, gender roles and intimate partner relationship (Arce y Fariña, 2005) was applied, in conjunction with an answer validity assessment protocol. The results show significant presence of irrational beliefs in this population, beyond random expectation, in the three dimensions assessed. In addition, predominant beliefs among convicted batterers were identified, according to their prevalence in at least half of the sample. The results are finally discussed in relation to intervention and the tendency of distorted response.
