Abstract

The civil war represented a tragic turning point in Spanish life. One of the most affected groups was teachers, who were subjected to a process of “purging” to punish their links, real or imagined, with the legitimate authorities and to assess their suitability for the new regime. This long and detailed process sentenced many teachers to external exile, from which they rarely returned, or to a painful internal exile with loss of teaching jobs, isolation from the social environment, deprivation and loneliness. We analyse the inner exile of a group of Galician teachers and their exemplary survival mechanisms
