Abstract
The article presents a reflection on the multifunctional and new uses of rural areas. It focuses on rural tourism as a catalyst for new rural development and in different territories is enhanced local identity, heritage resources, environmental and cultural to diversify rural economies. The case studies of Catalonia and Baixa Limia, in Galicia, described as the local contract, the involvement of society, the involvement of government and local identity, are key to energizing the new potential of rural areas.
