This paper clarifies and puts forward a new proposal to the problem of transworld identity. The argument is developed as follows: First, we focus on generally accepted views on the topic distinguishing those that take the point to be problematic and controversial from those considering the topic a pseudo-question. In the second place, we separate in our discussion two different aspects -often confused in the current literature- the ontosemantic and the epistemic-pragmatic dimensions of the problem. Third, taking the first aspect to be unproblematic we focus on the second arguing for -along the lines of a plausible realist interpretation of scientific discovery (Harré, Bhaskar)- a particular kind of essentialism that can be adopted as a useful tool in the ontological and epistemic understanding of an individual. As a consequence, a natural de-construction of the ontological status of possible worlds (against Lewis' views) arises.
