Abstract

AbstractThis paper presents the results of the assesment of scientific competency: explaining phenomena scientifically. In this study a sample (n = 24) of students from Biochemistry and Biotechnology courses at Universidad Nacional del Litoral (Argentina) was investigated to know how they have acquired and/or developed such competency during the first three years of college-level (Basic Cycle) . To collect the information, four questionnaires were drafted from tests proposed in the report PISA 2006. The first one, was designed with the aim to inquire into the initial competency to explain phenomena scientifically of the first year students. The other three were designed to explore the influence of the courses in Chemistry on the development of such competency. In addition, analysis instruments were designed to process and categorize the information obtained.
