Resumo

This article analyses the Brazilian economy during the period 1960-2000 from a sectoral and regional perspective. We analyze the differences between Brazil and other countries as well as the regional differences of development inside the country. We find that differences in the educational level of population are of uppermost importance to explain differences in industrial development and Gross Domestic Product by inhabitant at regional level. We present an econometric model which shows the positive impact of industry on Brazilian economic growth, which is of special interest for regional economic policies.
