Abstract

The effects of Climate Change are one of the main environmental problems that will affect the world in the future, and the policies and measures of prevention and adaptation will be the great challenges of the society. One of the multiple consequences of Climate Change will be the scarcity of available water resources, all of this, taking into account an increase and concentration of population in urban areas. Therefore, one of the main challenges in urban areas will be to guarantee quantity and quality water supply, especially in water stress areas. The research presented here will analyze how the installation of meters with remote reading (Smart Meters) in the city of Alicante could contribute to the adaptation and mitigation of Climate Change. The main conclusion is that the adoption of this technology has made it possible to control the consumption and supply water and, therefore to make a more sustainable management of the resource (reducing the water supply, losses and fraud) and the reduction of CO2 emissions due to the replacement and reduction of the attempts to read the conventional meter by remote reading.
