Abstract

Sewage sludge is applied to soils without a previous complete and specific characterization, because is timeconsuming and expensive and because current Spanish regulations permit sewage sludge use in agriculture with only one analysis of all parameters of sewage sludge every six months in spite of the variability of the different parameters of the sludge.. The estimation of key parameters in terms of agronomic and environmental requirements based on the use of near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) could be an interesting approach to improve its management. NIRS is frequently applied in environmental analyses including soil organic matter, soil carbon, humic and fulvic acids, organic wastes, nutritional quality of forages samples and mineral concentration in plants. The validation of a NIRS-based advanced model called “Agroresources” as a method of estimation of main nutrients, organic matter pool and heavy metals in sewage sludge by comparison to classical analytical procedure was the main purpose of this study. In this study, more than 300 sewage sludge samples were used to calibrate the “Agroresources” model and a batch of 283 samples, previously characterized by classical techniques, were also estimated using our NIR model. The Accuracy of “Agroresources” NIR estimation tool compared with the classical analytical results was studied depending on each sewage sludge parameter. In addition, an overall evaluation of the compared economic costs, the range of variation and therefore the feasibility of “Agroresources” model for helping us in fine tuning of application rates at local and regional scale were established.
