Resumo

Study on the effects of an intervention programme on intimate-partner violence (IPV) offenders by focusing on the assessment of recidivism using police and victim reports. Though the primary objective of any intervention programmes is to curtail recidivism, operational and process outcomes indicative of the offender’s progress should also be analysed. Thus, the study focused on assessing the offender’s willingness to accept responsibility, treatment adherence, and progress by examining the process of change, as a discrete indicator of treatment efficacy for first-time IPV offenders. The sample consisted of a total of 300 first-time offenders undergoing treatment in prison. The results reveal that prison treatment for first-time IPV offenders failed to meet the initial objectives i.e., the maintenance stage of the Transtheoretical Model of Change (Prochaska and DiClemente, 1982). Offenders achieved stage 3, preparation for treatment, whereby the offender decides to change and accepts treatment, but lacks the abilities and skills to do so or to achieve the maintenance of alternative behaviour to violence.
