Abstract

This works aims at analysing the system of settlements of the Metropolitan Area of Vigo, a complex and disorder urban reality (which is formed by 1,272 singular population entities, grouped in 122 parishes and 14 municipalities), where uncontrolled suburbanisation and counterurbanisation processes are easily identified. By defining four territorial areas: urban, suburban, rururban and rural, the state of the AMV is analyzed in order to establish management measures to achieve an efficient and hierarchical system of settlements. This model can be the reference to establish the bases of a network of public services more efficient and close to the local society, favoring their quality of life.
