Resumo

Mercury content and distribution, as well as the relationships between Hg and soil components were studied in 10 podzolic soils from Lugo province (NW Spain). Total Hg concentrations in the studied soils ranged from 7 to 116 ng g-1, being somewhat lower than the reference level established for Galician soils. In spite of this, podzols and podzolic soils play a key role in the accumulation of Hg and other potentially hazardous elements in the subsur- face soil layers as a consequence of the pedogenetic processes that take place in them. The main soil compo- nents involved in Hg retention and accumulation are soil organic matter and Al and Fe compounds, to which Hg shows a great geochemical affinity. Thus, highly significant correlations (p< 0.01) were obtained between Hg and soil organic matter and between Hg and Al and Fe compounds extracted with different extractant solutions. Re- garding Hg distribution in the soil profile, a strong decrease of Hg concentrations in the eluvial horizons (E) was observed whereas a subsurface peak of total Hg was detected in the illuvial horizons (Bh and Bs).
