Abstract

The objective of this study wasto evaluate the improvement of quality chemical runoff from a waste dump with polymetalliccontamination by applying a Technosol "a la carta". The runoff from the tailings showed acid pH, high C.E (12 mS / cm) and Eh (691 mV) and multi-element contamination. The use of Technosol as a rehabilitationsys- tem of tailing with toxic metals showed favorable results, which were evaluated through improvement in chemical quality of water runoff over 14 months. It was observed an improvement in the conditions of pH (3 to ≈8), reduc- tion in electrical conductivity and reduced redox potential and the concentration of sulfate and most potentially toxic elements (ex. Al, Cd , Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb) between 75 and 99% depending on the element.The improved quality short or long term came to similar to natural water levels. The application of Technosol decreased dispersion of potentially toxic elements in adjacent areas and, consequently, the environmental and public health risk.
