Abstract
Sorption is an important process governing the fate of pesticides in soils. In this work, we have studied sorption and desorption of three quaternary ammonium herbicides (paraquat, diquat, and difenzoquat) in four acid, coarse- textured soils, with a range of organic matter and copper contents. Sorption has been studied in the laboratory by means of equilibrium batch experiments. Sorption of the three pesticides followed the same sequence in all soils: PQ > DQ > DFQ. On the other hand, soil 1 showed higher adsorption capacity, followed by soils 2, 3 and 4, in this order. The different sorption capacities of each soil were not related to pH, clay or OM contents, as could be ex- pected, but rather to the Cu content. The results confirm that competition with Cu for sorption sites is an important factor for the retention of quaternary ammonium herbicides in soils of these characteristics.
