Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Systemic Family Therapy, applied in a school context, on family dynamics and the personal and school adjustment of adolescent children. The study ¿s design is quasi-experimental with a control group not equivalent and repeated measures. The participants were 110 families of the municipality of Madrid, Spain. The experimental group was composed by 55 families referred to the Family Support Center Padre Piquer (CAF Padre Piquer) which completed the intervention program, the control group consisted of 55 families of three schools. Systemic family therapy, in the condition in which it has been applied, had a statistically significant and clinically relevant improvement effect in each of the three measured dimensions. With regard to family dynamics, the ones who received treatment showed an improvement which ranged from 23% to 90 (depending on the variable), when compared with families who did not received the intervention. In relation to personal adjustment the improvement ranged between 60% and 110%; and in the school setting between 80% and 110%. According to the results, the systemic family therapy could be seen as a useful and even necessary resource within the school.
