Abstract

This article analyzes the processes of removals and socio-spatial conflicts generated by urban restructuring in Rio de Janeiro for their conversion to the 2016 Olympic Games. To illustrate this contradiction, Vila Autódromo was chosen, one of the favelas removed by urban restructuring which had occupied part of the lands that gave rise to the Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca, axis of real estate expansion in Rio de Janeiro. It is an emblematic community because, in addition to having the legal right to grant permanence delegated by the state public authority, it resisted until the last recourse against the announcement of removal done by the City of Rio de Janeiro in 2009. In the first part of the article , a panorama of urban entrepreneurship will be outlined and how was the preparation process of Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympics, as well as the resulting socio-spatial conflicts. The second part will analyze the interests of the private sphere, allied to the public power, in the election of the Barra da Tijuca region as a new centrality in Rio de Janeiro. And finally, the third part will deal with the Vila Autódromo Community’s resistance to the removal process and its removal process
