Resumo

The economic Euroregion composed of Galicia and North Portugal is an excellent scenario for analysing the results of the process of creation of the common labour market within the European Union, both on account of its special features (important historical, cultural and linguistic affinities) and the result of convergence observed in its main labour indicators. The approximation of labour market indicators between Galicia and North Portugal poses a series of questions that this article sets out to answer. First of all, we examine in depth to what extent the results of both labour markets have converged. Secondly, what part of this process is directly connected with the creation of a common labour market and is not just the result of counterposed domestic forces to which each region is tied independently. Lastly, we will analyse whether the interregional differences in unemployment may be compensated by other features of employment. If this is the case, even without barriers to the mobility of workers, convergence in the labour market aggregates between will never be complete.
