Zusammenfassung
lntroduction: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy, safety and tolerance of azithromycin versus amoxicillin/clavulanate in the treatment of odontogenic acute oral infections. Patients and Method: This open, comparative, multicenter study included 208 patients suffering an odontogenic acute oral infection, randomly assigned to each group. 102 patients received azithromycin, and 106 patients were treated with amoxicillin/clavulanate. A clinical history and a physical exploration were performed, and urine and blood samples were collected. At each visit, signs and symptons of each condition were assessed. Results: The clinical outcome was similar in both therapeutic groups, with a level of complete healing or improvement above 90%. Azithromycin was better tolerated, and compliance was higher than with amoxicillin/clavulanate. Most adverse effects were gastrointestinal, although not relevant. Conclusion: Azithromycin and amoxicillin/clavulanate were equally effective in the treatment of odontogenic acute oral infections, but azithromycin dosage favoured a better compliance, and less and not important adverse effects.
