Abstract

Based on a brief research carried out there where we have put forward various reflections on the decay of the traditional village centre as the new urban area on the seafront started developing as of 1950, the Council´s urban development policy, the rise of the first urban neighbourhood in 1962 and other aspects of social change, we now aim to focus on Moaña as a case study during the 1950-1987 period so as to be able to have a better compared perspective of two well-differentiated historical and political periods: a) Franco´s dictatorship between 1950 and 1975 together with the local political transition to democracy between 1976 and 1979. That time division is thus established in order to try and differentiate politics, town planning and society in three periods: the first one comprises up to the Stabilization Plan in 1959, the second one spans till the death of the dictator and the third one includes the weak local governments leading up to the new democratically-elected Local Government. b) The local democratic management between 1979 and 1987 : from the very start of the local democratic period, Moaña became a council ruled by left wing nationalist parties, which was fairly rare in Galicia at the time. We intend to analyse politics, town planning and society at a time of ideological, political, urban development and social change as opposed to the preceding historical period.
