Abstract

The fact that saint John of Avila used to quote Plato, whom he most probably read in the Latin version of Marsilio Ficino, is used in this paper as evidence for his real interest in the Classics, albeit limited in the case of Plato to some topics of ethics and politics, because the core of Platonic philosophy (and Greek philosophy in general) gets subjected to Christian revelation. Nonetheless, he appreciates some of the Platonic arguments and even admires the depth of some of Plato’s intuitions.
