Abstract

Background and objectives: The corneal ulcer is the most serious complication of wearing contact lenses. We performed a prospective study in a population of asymptomatic contact lens wearers, the aim was to determine the rate of contamination in their contact lens cases and conjunctivas and evaluate the role of the compliance and the efficacy of disinfecting solutions. Patients and methods: Cultures were obtained from lens cases and conjunctivas of 30 asymptomatic disposable contact lens wearers. AII patients answered a questionnaire about contact lenses use, wearing habits and type of disinfecting solutions used. Results: Contamination was found in 50% of the lens cases and 46.7% had conjunctival contamination. The most frequently isolated bacteria in the lens cases was Serratia Marcescens. Coagulase negative Staphylococcus were the most frequently isolated microorganisms in the cultures from the conjunctive. conctustons; The percentage of contaminated lens cases in this study is comparable to earlier microbiological studies. The use of Poliquaternium-1 for disinfection was associated with a increase in the rate of contamination of the lens storage case. We emphasize the importance of contact lens care instructions. Cleaning and periodic replacement of contact lens storage cases is recommended.
