Abstract

Purpose: To show the utility of opaque tinted soft contact lenses with transparent pupil when the incisions of refractive surgery get in the way of the light across the pupil. Case report: The case of a 37-year-old Caucasian male who had octagonal keratectomy performed 18 months ago in Mexico to correct their hyperopic astigmatism in both eyes is presented. After surgery the patient is under pilocarpine 1% treatment due the internal incision edges appear affecting the optic zone. Currently the pilocarpine effect is ineffective and the patient report blurred vision and light scattering related bother decreasing the ability to make different visual tasks and inducing sensible psychological affectation. The VA was 20/50 in the RE increasing to 20/25 adding a –2 cyl 160º lens; 20/25 in the LE increasing to 20/20 adding a –0.75 cyl 140º lens. The biomicroscopy examination showed the incisions adopting an octagonal shape with 3 mm of major diameter. The pupil dimension was around 5 mm in both eyes. Contact lens fitting was performed with trial lenses and finally lens design was essentially the same for both eyes Art-Lens® opaque tinted soft contact lenses with 2,5 mm pupil size, 11,5 mm iris demarcation and –1,00 D and –0,75 D in RE and LE respectively. After contact lens fitting the vision improved in both eyes and no complaint was reported due light scattering effect, thus the psychological sphere of the patient change significantly.
