Abstract

Purpose: To report the relationship between subjective and objective tear meniscus assessments and to propose a method directed to objectively assesses the regularity of the meniscus. Methods: Forty young healthy subjects were included in the study. The tear meniscus height (TMH) of the right eye was measured with an eye piece graticule inserted into a slit lamp with a magnification of 40x. from the centre of the inferior eyelid to the brightest reflex. Moreover, TMH was measured nasally TMHN and temporally. Furthermore, the tear meniscus was subjectively graded in four steps. Results: TMH was statistically higher in «normal» subjective grades, and lower in «abnormal» subjective grades. As expected, There was no different between TMHN and TMHT as the majority of the sample presented a regular menisci. Although not statistically significant, TMHN-TMHT differences showed trend to be smaller in subjective grades more healthy. Conclusion: TMH measured up to the brightest reflex offers an easy way to perform such measurement. Objective and subjective assessment were related. It appears that peripheral measurement of TMH may evaluate the regularity of the meniscus but more studies are necessary.
