Resumo

In this essay I discuss the relationship between the genocentric view of life and two ancient attitudes: the belief in an immaterial principle organizer of matter and the patriarchal interpretation of that principle. This relationship suggests that the primacy of the causal role of genes in explaining the phenotype is another consequence of an ancient cultural tradition rooted in objective idealism. However, the identification of the male with an external force acting on matter, which is identified with the feminine, is an idea that probably dates back to the Neolithic.
