Zusammenfassung

From an educational perspective, the initiatives framed in the movement of the “transition towns” contain the necessary elements to be considered a valid methodology to confront the problems of the Climatic Change and the Peak Oil through community dynamics. On the other hand, the universities, as like possible referents in the search of solutions to the environmental crisis, in spite of the experiences of sustainability impulsed last years, are far away to be entities of low environmental impact and exists doubts about its capacity to form citizen and professional critical and engaged with the challenges of the environmental crisis. In this context, it was developed a study of multiple case that analyze from an environmental-educational perspective the experience of three universities in transition: the University of Santiago de Compostela, the University of Edinburgh and the University of Minho. The objective is to value the potential of the methodology of the transition to surpass a hypothetical “ glass ceiling” that obstruct the sustainability in the university institutions. The analysis confirms the existence of a glass ceiling in the sustainability strategies unable of subverter, even through innovative methodologies as the transition, the structures and dynamic academic, corporate, organisational and cultural that tend to reproduce its unsustainability.
