Resumen
In this study, the regional migratory flows in Spain are analysed by educational level. However, the data regarding the flows are not available in the desired format and therefore need prior treatment that is not without methodological issues. In fact, studies regarding migrants in Spain do not usually distinguish the education background that they possess. Official statistics related to this topic, the Residential Variations Survey and the Survey of Migration, do not provide such information, despite being published annually. Therefore, the deficiencies of these two sources suggest the modification of the estimation method commonly used in this field. In this sense, a technique is proposed for the projection of intra- and interregional migration –by year and disaggregated educational level– in Spain through the use of censuses: an extension of the iterative proportional fitting (IPF). In this regard, it is noted that a basic IPF estimates matrices through proportional corrections by row and column on a base matrix (in succession) and according to the margins, which are known a priori. However, in this extension, not only the annual margin vectors are made use of, but also that the total migratory flows between regions be considered. This implies a redesign of the basic IPF so that tri-proportional adjustments are made, motivated precisely by the information made available. Finally, the coefficients of Chenery and Watanabe and Streit are used to identify the internal migration of the population with tertiary studies in Spain.
