Abstract

Isotopic sequences show the existence of numerous climatic oscillations occurred during the last glacial period in the North Atlantic, particularly during the Würm interstadial (MIS 3). This episode shows a glacial retreat northward and an intensification of the climatic oscillations. Along the NW Iberian coast there is an important set of fossilized deposits, which records this and other periods of the last glacial. The sequence reflects an alternation of phases of expansion and detraction of forests. The data reveal the strategic situation of the Iberian Northwest to assessing the vegetation response to changes in the North Atlantic, and the presence of areas of refuge for mesophilous and thermophilous trees.
