Abstract

Evaristo de Sela, self-taught Hellenist and High School Professor of Greek, spent most of his leisure time on the translation of the Greco-Latin classics and lexicographical works in the field of Galician place names. Found among his unpublished papers was a version in Galician of the Filipica I by Demostenes, a Greek text difficult to read. Although it was not finished, there is enough research on it as to be known by the educated Galician readers. In this paper we edit the text and we study the translation method of the Hellenist. For this purpose, we will try to assess the degree of deviation from the original text by taking into account the linguistic, socio-cultural and poetic spheres. The analysis will show his talent as a translator and the quality of the present version.
