Abstract

An adult German Shepherd dog was evaluated in our hospital because of a three-week history of pain when opening the mouth. Physical examination revealed the presence of a fluctuating mass in the right frontotemporal region and pain to the retropulsion of the right eye as well as atrophy of the temporalis and masseter muscles. Hematology showed a moderate neutrophilic leukocytosis. A large-sized cavitary lesion with an anechoic content was observed in the frontotemporal area on ultrasonographic examination. A sample was obtained and the cytological analysis revealed purulent material mixed with saliva. A computed tomography (CT) study was performed to assess the extent and the possible origin of the abscess. The results showed an image compatible with a zygomatic sialadenitis associated with a retrobulbar abscess which extended subcutaneously up to the occipital region. Treatment consisted on surgical drainage of the lesion. A sample was obtained and bacterial culture produced a pure growth of Staphylococcus aureus. No significant complications occurred during the postoperative period. A CT study was repeated 4 weeks after the surgery and showed a complete resolution of the zygomatic sialadenitis and abscess.
