Abstract

The aim of the study was to know the state of alteration of the granites used to built sorne of the monumental buildings in Santiago and La Coruña, by comparative analyses with rocks from the quarries where, probably, those granites were taken. The results showed a similar hydrolysis degree in both types of sampIes, the greater damage of the rocks from the monuments is related to physical or mechanical effects and, mainly, to salt crystalization phenomena into rock pores.
