Abstract

Service-learning is a methodology which has recently come to Spain after a long history in the USA and other countries. Its development in the Iberian context is recent, but there is already a network of states which strives for its consolidation. The focus of the study is to consider service-learning in the context of the educational situation of Galicia. The research problem is expressed in terms of feasibility and effective learning, by means of a preliminary evaluation of the situation presented by universities as potential drivers of service-learning programs. Exploring the methodological issues we can say that our study follows an ex post facto methodology (non-experimental), with a descriptive method of survey among university teachers. The target population has been the teaching staff of the University of Santiago de Compostela, on its three campuses (two of them in Santiago de Compostela and a third in Lugo.) In this regard, we first collected data describing the sample (326 subjects), which made it possible to bring forward a proposal for implementation, development, and consolidation of the service-learning methodology in Galician Universities. In short, this article aims to study teaching as it is currently taught in Galician universities, the perception of the social responsibility of universities, and the knowledge that teachers have regarding service-learning as well as its relevance in our university system.
