Abstract

The distribution and abundance of breeding bird communities were studied at the “Serra da Enciña da Lastra” Natural Park (Galicia, NW Spain) during the breeding seasons from 2006 to 2008. A total of 100 species were recorded, of which 84 were categorized as Confirmed breeding or Probable breeding and 16 as Possible breeding. Another 24 species were cited at the study area over the past 22 years by different authors. The biogeographic location of the Natural Park and its landscape heterogeneity favour high bird richness. From a biodiversity conservation perspective the study area has a great interest in Galicia mainly due to the presence of rupicolous species with very restricted distribution in the Galician territory as well as other species strongly associated with Mediterranean ecosystems. Preservation of the traditional land uses, livestock and agriculture, and the strict protection of the calcareous cliffs in the Nature Reserve are important management actions, required to promote the breeding of rupicolous birds and to ensure effective bird conservation at the Natural Park.
