Resumo

The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of playing tactics and situational variables over the success obtained by an elite soccer team in the attacking phase. The sample was constituted by 908 possessions obtained by a team from the Spanish soccer league in 12 matches played during the 2009-2010 season. The dependent variable was the level of success obtained in the attacking phase. The independent variables considered were: six qualitative measures of the attacking behaviour, two qualitative measures of the defensive behaviour of the opponent and three situational variables. Sampled matches were registered by the AMISCO PRO® system. Data were analyzed using chi-square analysis and multiple logistic regression analysis. The results of the chi-square analysis show that there were differences in the possession outcome for starting zone, team possession type, number of passes, players in possession, passing options, opponent number, duration (P<0.001) and match status (P<0.05). The proposed logistic regression model was constituted by: starting zone, team possession type, duration, opponent number, match status, quality of the opposition, team possession type*starting zone and quality of the opposition*team possession type.
