Resumo

This article analyses the development of gender mainstreaming in Spain, the most recent strategy to promote equality between men and women, and it explores its implications for public organizations’ management. After stating its characteristics and grounds, its adoption and implementation at the state and regional level is described, giving account of the tools introduced to ease its development. Subsequently, the case of the Basque Country is specifically addressed. To conclude, the challenges to be faced by the strategy in its aim to make gender equality a transversal goal of all institutions are presented.
