Abstract
The economic results in 1996 from a random sample of 108 Galician dairy farms stratifíed according to their assigned milk quota (confidence interval of 95% and standard error of 6%) are presented in this article, being compared with the official records published by the Galician government. On average, farm size is 12.4 ha of grass and arable land for fodder crops, holding a herd of 18 cows. Dairy production records show mean valúes of milk yield and concéntrate inputs of 5326 L and 1871.6 kg per cow and lactation, respectively. Purchased animal feed represents 66.7% of the variable cost (20.5 ptas/L), from which the 86.9% is the expense in concéntrate for dairy cows. The most important components of the Fixed Cost (11.8 ptas/L) are Machinery and buildings depreciation (39.3%) and the Social Family Insurance accounts (29.5%). The Opportunity Cost (24.2 ptas/L) sets up the differences among strata for the Total Cost (56.5 ptas/L). Only for production over 120 t of milk, the profit is positive and the milk price is higher than the Break-even point including Opportunity Cost.
