Abstract
The variety of physiological, psychological, economic and social changes that accompany aging compromise the nutritional status and interfered directly in the preservation of health, in which cognitive processes are particularly relevant because older adults with cognitive deterioration present higher nutritional risk than the elderly mentally healthy. We developed across-sectional study in order to verify that the cognitive deterioration influences the nutritional status of elderly. The study population consisted of 133 individuals aged from 65 years living in a geriatric institution of the Galicia. Anthropometric evaluation was performed by measuring BMI, C Band CP. It was used frequencies and measures of central tendency to understand and characterize the anthropometric measure ments of elderly evaluated and the test for analysis of variance to one factor ANOVA to respond the purpose planned. Found a prevalence of 10.8% of Under nutrition, 37.7% of Normal weight and 51.5% of Obesity with similar distribution in both genders. The perimeters evaluated showed no significant loss of muscle mass among the residents since 73.8% have a CP appropriate, according to CB, only 30% had inadequate protein reserves. The cognitive deterioration was very prevalent among the elderly evaluated(80.8%) and showed significant influence on their nutritional status. Was verified a high degree of malnutrition(62.3%) associated with a high prevalence of cognitive impairment in the studied sample.
