Abstract
Female sex hormones are a co-etiologic factor for periodontal disease: during pregnancy produces vascular, celular, microbiological and immunological changes. There are recent publications relating periodontal disease as a possible cause of preterm and/or low weight births. Periodontal infection produces an increase of the intraamniotic level of TNFα and PGE2, who are fisiologic mediators of labour. So far it's impossible to do a metaanalyses because there's not enough reports about it, to know if periodontal treatment would decrease the incidence of preterm low wieght birth.
