Abstract

One of the main limitations in orthodontic treatment in partial edentulous patients is the insufficient anchorage to obtain desirable tooth movement. In last decade orthodontists used implants as a final solution in the treatment planning of those cases where a prosthetic rehabilitation was necessary. Actually they are conscious of the great benefit that the use of ossseointegrated implants suppose to orthodontic therapy, as an absolute anchorage and an adequate support to future prostheses. The presence of orthodontist, periodontist, prosthodontist, prosthesist and restorative dentist as an integrated part of a multidisciplinary team, is essential in the treatrnent planning of these patients. The main goal is not only to achieve the ideal position of implant frorn an orthodontic point of view, but also and more important, to localize the best position to get an adequate restoration and post-orthodontics occlusal rehabilitation. The aim of this article is to review the indications of using implants as anchorage, the method of localizing the best position for placing implants, the timing for orthodontic loading, types of provisional restorations where orthodontic appliances will be attached, and the effect of orthodontic loading on osseointegration and final restoration.
