Abstract
Besides the antiplaque and antigingivitis activity of mouthrinses, much evidence has been published supporting the use of mouthwashes in other crucial areas of oral health. This article presents a literature review of evidence-based mouthwashes, such as chlorhexidine, essential oils and triclosan on different areas of oral health. These areas include caries prevention and control, maintenance of implant health, postsurgery uses, reduction of bacteria in dental aerosols, reduction of bacteraemia following dental manipulations, as an adjunct in orthodontic patients, to alleviate recurrent oral aftae, and as an adjunct in special needs patients.
